| Name: Almond Latin Name: Prunus amygdalus Family: Rosaceae Discovery: Centuries ago Almonds are said to have originated in ancient China. They are then supposed to have spread from India and Persia through southern and middle Europe, reaching England in the 1600s. The earliest almond trees in the US were those introduced from Mexico and Spain. However those never managed to carry any fruits. The first successful plantations were made in 1843 in California which is the only place in the North American area where Almonds are grown commercially. Height: The fruit tree is between 5 to 12 m in height. It has a strong root system as well as a tap root. During the blossom period the tree carries white to pink flowers. Nut production: Almonds begin bearing relatively young. If the trees are well cared for and healthy, they will continue to increase in size and production for many years. The Fruit: Almonds are so-called stone fruits, related to the Peach and the Cherry and are therefore not nut fruits. The fruit itself is a drupe with a smoky inedible flesh. The stone contains one or two edible almond nuts. Harvest and processing: When the fruit is ripe and the skin has sprung open, the trunk of the almond tree is grasped by a machine that shakes the tree trunk vigorously to get the fruits down. The exocarp around the stone is then removed as soon as possible. Nutritional Information: |
