WALNOTEN

    Name: Walnut

Latin Name: Juglans regia

Family: Juglandaceae

Discovery: The Walnut is thought to have been around for millions of years and is the oldest tree fruit known to humans. They came from Persia and were spread round the old world by the Ancient Greeks. In the Medieval Days, the English transported the Walnuts around the world in ships. This is why the Walnuts are sometimes referred to as English Walnuts. Eventually they travelled through the Mediterranean, Europe to the U.S.A. California is one of the top walnut producers nowadays.

Height: The height of a Walnut tree can be between 20-28 m with an open, rounded crown.

Nut production: The Walnut trees begin producing large amount of nuts when they are about 30 years old, however moderate amounts are being produced as from the age of 6. Good crops occur 2 out of every 5 years.

The Fruit: The nuts are covered and protected by a thick, green hull which splits during August signalising their ripeness.

Harvest and processing: When the nuts are ripe and the hull is split, the orchard is dragged clean from debris and sticks. The trees are shaken by a mechanical shaker and then picked up by a mechanical harvester. They are then hulled, washed and dried.
